Abstract

Flood disasters frequently disrupt livelihoods and economic stability, yet the psychological consequences of these disruptions among affected communities in Indonesia, particularly outside Java, remain understudied. This study examined the influence of job disruption and economic hardship on psychological distress among flood-affected residents of Aceh Tamiang Regency following the November 2025 flash flood. It was hypothesized that job disruption and economic hardship would significantly predict psychological distress, both simultaneously and partially. Using an explanatory survey design, data were collected from 100 respondents selected through non-probability purposive-criterion sampling and analyzed using multiple linear regression. Results showed that job disruption and economic hardship simultaneously had a significant effect on psychological distress (R² = 0.622; F = 79.863; p < 0.001). Partially, economic hardship significantly predicted psychological distress (B = 0.956; p < 0.001), whereas job disruption did not (B = 0.194; p = 0.243). These findings suggest that financial strain, rather than work disruption itself, is the more critical determinant of psychological distress following flood disasters. This underscores the need for disaster recovery policies that prioritize direct economic assistance alongside livelihood restoration programs to more effectively address the mental health needs of flood-affected communities.
